The Beauty of Indonesian Teak Wood

Hope it’s been a great day for you. We’re doing swell over here at the Matt Clark Tile & Stone showroom, because guess what…we have WOOD! Sort of… To explain, let’s take a field trip…

…Picture it: Summer time, Indonesia, late 7th Century. Forests are lush with vibrant tribal communities. These tribes have been utilizing the resources around them for centuries creating useful tools and painted wooden shelters. The company, Island Timber, organically grew from immersing themselves into Indonesian culture and embracing the exotic. Besides being a delicacy of eye candies, these beautiful structures are a fabulous demonstration of human creativity.

For decades, creators at Island Timber have been interested in exploring organic resources to manufacture unique surfaces, “Over time [their] love of Indonesian hardwoods turned from interest to obsession and [they] were compelled to develop a range of wood veneer products to showcase and share this aesthetic [they]’d fallen so deeply for.” They are pleased to present their first Island timber range. Here’s some photos. They’re beautiful here, but nothing compared to this special, revived material in person – check it out at our showroom here in San Luis Opispo.

Tiling Atascadero with Greeen Products

Not only does Matt Clark Tile & Stone provide the design, installation and tile Atascadero homeowners want, the company follows environmentally friendly initiatives. “We recycle as much as possible including shipping materials, buy 100-percent recycled paper, use environmentally friendly cleaning products, and we are working with the landscaper to use natural and organic weeding methods. We support tile artisans who are also environmentally conscious,” said Vice President Katie Franklin. “We do business with companies that recycle glass and clay, cardboard boxes, and use recycled water in production. Some of our European companies even recycle their energy to surrounding communities.” A company’s green initiatives can be an important consideration for home and business owners looking for tile in Atascadero.

Recycling has become a very important aspect of building-related industries. The tile industry is no exception and has made great strides to reduce its carbon footprint. Many tile manufacturers not only recycle material, but also clean and recycle waste water back in to the production process. Making new tile products from tiles that were previously installed is just one green technology that is continually being refined and improved. Using recycled materials in the building industry has the attention of U.S. Green Building Council. Products, including tile, that are made with recycled materials have a stronger chance of being selected for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) projects than those that don’t.

Some of the green initiatives followed by tile artisans Matt Clark Tile & Stone represents are:

  • l Ken Mason Tile KMT/BCIA cleans and recycles water, sprays booth air to reduce dust and recycles clay and paper products. All of the pigments used on the tiles are water based.

  • l Oceanside Glass Tile recycles over two million pounds of post consumer bottle glass each year and implemented a co-processing partnership to almost completely eliminate any manufacturing waste from going to a landfill.

  • l Aguayo Tiles Mosaico, a Dominican company, is saving an important part of Cuba’s artistic history by reviving the cement tile designs from antiquated and crumbling structures in Havana and Camagüey. In some cases, these structures were in such disrepair that debris had to be removed to find the beautiful tile floors.

Matt Clark Tile &Stone is the only authorized source in San Luis Obispo county for brands that include the artisans just mentioned and others such as: American Olean, Aguayo Tiles Mosaico, Artistic, Athens, Boyce and Bean, Carved Stone, Casa Dolce Casa, Country Floors, Crossville, Custom, Emil, Fireclay, Happy Floors, Island Stone, Karen Patterson, Mandala, Mapai, Marble Systems, Metaphor Bronze, Original Style, Pederables Terracotta, Porcelanosa, Pratt and Larsen, Quarry Collection, Revival, Schluter, Syzygy, Terra, Tommy Bahama, Trikeenan, Tunisia, UBC, Unique, and many more.
